Moving house can be stressful in itself – it is known as one of the three most stressful things a person can do. Add children into the equation and it can become extremely challenging.
For a child of any age, moving house can bring worries and anxiety to the forefront of their minds. It’s a lot to take in for them and can be difficult to understand.
Moving with children can be difficult for a number of reasons, we have put together a list of top tips on how to make moving with children easier and less stressful.
Communication is key – make sure you talk to your children about moving so that it isn’t a shock for them.
Tell them what will be the same and what might be different. Will they be going to a new school? Will they be sharing a bedroom with their sibling or have their own bedroom? Are you moving to a bigger property or a smaller one. The more you talk about the process and get them involved, the less anxious they will be.
Visit the New Home Together – we don’t recommend this until a property has been selected and a sale has been agreed. However, visiting the property together can really make a difference when it comes to moving with children. At Stacks we can help organise additional viewings of your property after a sale has been agreed so you can prepare your children by viewing your new home together.
Choose a moving day that fits with your children – this looks different for different people. If you are staying local, a school day might be a good option for a moving day as the children will be taken care of for the most part.
If you are moving further afield you may want to aim for the summer holidays so that your children finish their school year in one location and start the new school year at their new school. The best way to go about selecting a moving date is to analyse your situation and decide what works best for your family.
Label everything – when you get to your new home you will want your children to settle in quickly, to do this you will need to be able to find and unpack all of their home comforts. For this reason, we suggest going into detail on your box labels so you know which ones you will want to unpack first.
There’s nothing worse that opening box after box trying to locate a specific item. Making sure you use a clear and concise system to label your boxes will means you can settle your children into their new home with all their comforts from their old house quickly and easily.
Use an Experienced Property Finder – using a good property finder can help relieve some of your stress and make the entire process of moving easier. Children tend to pick up on the feelings of the people around them so the more relaxed you are the more relaxed they will be.
