Many seaside resorts are getting a hipster makeover as young families flock to the coast

In Southend-on-Sea house prices have risen 27 per cent — more than anywhere else in Essex — since the opening of the expanded terminal at London Southend airport five years ago, according to Zoopla. Jamie Oliver’s Friday Night Feast series on Channel 4 has also shone a spotlight on the town. The restaurant on the pier that features in the programme is now open to the public. An easy commute helps — Southend is less than an hour by train to Fenchurch Street in London — and good schools are vital. “The town is boosted by London families who can no longer afford private school so they send their children to Southend’s grammar schools instead,” says Anthony Pearce of Stacks Property Search. The most desirable areas are Thorpe Bay, where four or five-bedroom detached houses cost from £750,000, and Leigh-on-Sea, with similar properties from £500,000.
