About Milton Keynes

There’s nowhere quite like Milton Keynes in the UK, in our opinion!  MK was built subsuming 17 villages in the area, the road network laid out in a grid system and was  the largest of the 1960s ‘New Towns Movement’.

So, whilst the older generation may still be snooty about a ‘new town’ and casual visitors may never venture from the dual carriageways, it genuinely has a combination of purpose-built, well-designed modern living and traditional village communities unavailable elsewhere in such close proximity to urban amenities.  Milton Keynes was designed as a live/work location,  a philosophy that holds true today with the road, cycle and footpath networks, linking the green and communal spaces with the business and commercial sectors, all easily accessible from the residential areas.

For those who already know it, these benefits are self-evident. However, Milton Keynes is becoming a ‘property hotspot’ as these advantages dawn on commuters wanting a short train-ride to London, plus all the facilities and entertainments of a large town.  Milton Keynes has areas to suit all budgets, and all the housing options available from high-end lakeside & riverside properties, large executive homes on the golf course to village green cottages or city apartments.

Our clients may be moving some distance, or be local; they may be too busy or not know where to begin;  they may be unable to find a suitable house or have too much choice – see our case studies to see how we’ve helped people in your situation.

Speak to Stacks Buckinghamshire today to discuss your options for moving to Milton Keynes or the surrounding area. Whether you are considering a property in Milton Keynes, or one of the plentiful nearby villages which benefit from the enormous convenience of a wealthy city, whilst being set in truly rural locations.

London Euston is 33 minutes by train from Milton Keynes Central, while Heathrow Airport is an hour-and-a-quarter and Gatwick an hour-and-a-half. Luton Airport is 20 minutes.  The M1 runs to the west, and the A421 runs East to the M40.

There are areas with their own strong village identity within Milton Keynes itself, such as Shenley Brook End, Shenley Church End, Woolstone, Woughton on the Green, Loughton which lean towards more traditional styling.  New build is obviously in abundance, for those who like clean lines and modern living.

To the West, Stony Stratford & Old Stratford would still consider themselves separate to MK, and they have their own full set of amenities.  Head towards Deanshanger, Nash, Whaddon to get more rural.  For more in this direction, see our Buckingham & Winslow pages.

Heading south, Bletchley is famous for its WW2 reputation. The Brickhills are in this direction (Bow Brickhill, Little Brickhill, Great Brickhill), as well as Stoke Hammond, Drayton Parslow & Newton Longville. See Woburn page and Leighton Buzzard & Aylesbury pages for more in this direction

To the East, Newport Pagnell is its own smaller town. The hamlets of Lathbury, Sherington, Chichely, Gayhurst & Tyringham have some gorgeous countryside and character properties.  You can also reach into Bedfordshire in this direction.

For property northwards, you quickly enter Northamptonshire, which can provide some economical options, still in easy reach of MK Station.  Explore our Stacks Northamptonshire site for more information in this direction on locations such as Towcester, Northampton & Olney.

Catchment is important in Milton Keynes, so fully research the school options.  There are private schools located within the town boundaries, but also many independent schools in the area which often have their own bus services out from MK.

Thornton College and Stowe School are nearby and Winchester House at Brackley, Beachborough & Swanbourne House are very popular prep schools.  Bedford Harpur Trust schools are also popular.

The Open University is based in Milton Keynes and provides employment opportunities, as does the University of Buckingham, well-known for its 2 year degree courses.

Too much to mention here, but explore http://www.destinationmiltonkeynes.co.uk/home to find what you’re interested in, particularly sports-wise, as many national sports have their national HQs in MK.

Milton Keynes has over 600 acres of parks https://www.theparkstrust.com/. Their site has an interactive map to explore the green spaces.

Manor Park at Great Linford, and canal walks. The park dates back to the 17th century and includes a large area of wildflower meadow. https://www.theparkstrust.com/parks/great-linford-manor-park/

Great Linford Lakes is another popular beauty spot for those living locally. It is made up of nine lakes and two miles of river, taking in a mixture of landscapes, great for keen fishermen. https://www.theparkstrust.com/parks/linford-lakes-nature-reserve/

Looking for its famous shopping facilities?  CentreMK

The central leisure zone including, bars, nightlife, casino & the indoor snow slope at Xscape. Other parts of the town also have their own leisure zones eg  https://www.mk1shoppingpark.co.uk/

Expansion has taken off again, with new sections being created.  It may be worthwhile buying a property that has a fixed setting – ie all that could be built, has been – this does not necessarily mean being in close proximity in MK, given the size of some plots available.

EastWest Rail will connect Oxford & Cambridge via MK, and the intention is to have an additional road route.  Ensure you understand the possibilities before committing to a purchase.
