Business Owners in Buckinghamshire

Being in business for yourself, or running the show for someone else, takes a certain type of entrepreneurial spirit. There are a lot of personal qualities required, and then there’s the solid network of contacts and suppliers too. And no business can be a success without them… Which is one important reason why anyone looking to run a business should consider living in Buckinghamshire.

Buckingham Business First go as far as to say that more businesses start up in the county than almost anywhere else in the country. Of course, Milton Keynes was specifically designed to encourage exactly that. And when one also considers that London is just over half an hour away on the train, one realises Buckinghamshire is actually a very accessible and cost-effective location to set up shop.

It might surprise you to know that Buckinghamshire actually has a £15bn economy, with just over thirty two thousand active businesses thriving in the area. Anyone thinking of starting up in Buckinghamshire, therefore, is not alone. In fact, eighty nine businesses start per ten thousand people in the county… and that’s 30% higher than the national county average. Add to this that more than seven hundred overseas companies have their European Head Offices in Buckinghamshire, and you start to see how it has pull.

But it’s not just for the big boys. After five years, more than half of the businesses that have started up here are still trading and growing. Plus if invention is your thing, you’ll be interested to learn that the county is in sixth place nationally for the highest rate of patents per capita.

That makes Buckinghamshire one buzzing business busting bonanza of an innovative place!

Buckinghamshire is bursting with enthusiasm for SMEs. Its central location, with superb access links along the A41, the M40 corridor, the M1, and of course easy distance into London, makes it a very attractive proposition for businesses starting up or relocating. But that’s not all there is to it…

  • Bucks has the fastest jobs growth of all local authorities
  • It particularly excels in 4 key areas of industry:
    • ICT including film and digital media
    • Advanced engineering
    • Food and drink
    • Assisted living
  • Its population just tips past half a million
  • Nearly 50% of the working residents have a university degree (or equivalent)

That all makes for a heady mix of talented, qualified, and motivated people living in the area.

There’s no doubt that with the buzz of the capital nearby, Buckinghamshire also offers an attractive and peaceful haven to which to retreat. The daily hub-bub of running a business can be nicely balanced by the tranquillity of country life if so desired. And there is plenty to offer families, couples, and indeed individuals looking for a good standard of living.

  • The county is renowned for its grammar schools, and has some of the country’s leading public schools too. Excellent day schools also abound, so a top level education is available to children throughout their school career. We have a page dedicated to our school search service in Buckinghamshire, just click here.
  • A wonderful and varied selection of activities are near most towns and villages. Miles of countryside footpaths lead to stunning views; haunting forests provide peace; and attractively maintained canals and waterways offer a fabulous choice of things to do. From the Chiltern Open Air Museum, to Green Dragon Rare Breeds Farm & Eco Centre, to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, there’s plenty to keep kids and adults entertained.
  • The National Trust is in overdrive in Buckinghamshire with the county boasting being home to more National Trust properties and sites than any other county in England. With country houses, rolling hills, and woodland walks, there’s A LOT to catch the eye and spark the interest.
  • There’s easy access to a wonderful selection of shopping outlets which offer a little something for everyone. From lusciously stocked farm shops, to creative boutiques, to attractive market towns, to larger centres such as Milton Keynes, shoppers of all ages are spoilt for choice!

Travel links make working and running a business from Buckinghamshire very easy…

  • The rail network – Heading into Euston is barely over half an hour, and lines from Oxford, Bicester & Haddenham & Thame make the West End of London very accessible too. In fact, Chiltern Railways is rated in the top third of operators for passenger satisfaction, running reliable routes into Marylebone from such towns as Aylesbury, Amersham, Beaconsfield, to name but a few, so commuting is well catered for. But heading up to Birmingham, or further north, is also a piece of cake with Milton Keynes being a key mainline station on the routes north.
  • The road network – Heading north is easy with the M1 nearby, as is heading into London, which is just half an hour’s drive or so. The M40 also provides superb access to other parts of the country, as does the M4. And with the M25 ringing the capital, most parts of London are easy to reach.
  • Airports within easy reach – Heathrow is 45 mins away, Luton just as close, and Gatwick is just under an hour and a half. Then of course Birmingham International Airport is very much within reach, as is Stansted. So heading to other places by air is about as easy as it gets.
