Northamptonshire For Commuters

Many people crave the peace and quiet of the countryside whilst still wanting to be able to enjoy the hustle and bustle of a city. Often it can seem like an impossible dream. However counties like Northamptonshire offer superb opportunities for those who would like to find that balance in their lives.

Even if you live and work in London, you’re still likely to be spending a fair amount of time commuting. And if you hanker after a bit of rural tranquillity at the beginning and end of each day, moving to and commuting from Northamptonshire is an excellent solution.

To put things in perspective first… It may be called NORTHamptonshire, but the county is far from actually being in the north. In fact, it’s still technically in the south – bearing in mind it’s south of the Watford Gap services on the M1. That makes it very commutable into London… AND very commutable into Birmingham, Coventry or Leicester too.

  • Trains from Northamptonshire – How long does it take? Guess what… only about an hour, with many choices ! Euston is the mainline destination from Northampton and Milton Keynes. But if you choose the west side of the county, you’ll also have access to stations such as Banbury & Bicester, which terminate at Marylebone. The routes east of the county from Kettering & Wellingborough are rapidly being discovered by the London daily commuters.  Even those in the top of the county can jump on fast trains at Market Harborough and Rugby.
  • Roads from Northamptonshire – The M1 cuts conveniently through Northamptonshire, which makes heading north or south very simple. And further to the west, only just beyond the boundaries of the county, the M40 runs too. Access to the road network across the country is very easy, therefore, and Northamptonshire is becoming known for being a superbly affordable location for those working in Birmingham, London, Leicester, and Coventry, amongst other places.
  • Airports near Northamptonshire – Luton Airport, Birmingham International Airport, and East Midlands Airport are all less than an hour’s drive from Northampton. And small airports in Oxford and Coventry can offer local flights to London etc., which can be surprisingly useful.

But you wouldn’t be considering commuting from a place like Northamptonshire if it didn’t have the stunning countryside and rural offering it has. England’s ‘secret shire’ takes a lot of beating. Many properties benefit from being built with Hornton stone (sometimes called Ironstone, think a warmer Cotswold yellow), which gives a wonderfully historic feel to the villages scattered across the county.

And, of course, the huge benefit of living near, but NOT in, the Cotswolds is… that’s where the tourists head. Northamptonshire’s rural landscape doesn’t tend to have to deal with coach loads of weekenders. It’s a genuinely agricultural county, with views of fields rolling into the distance available from many of the vantage points dotted around.

Then to add to this picture, we would also include the many market towns in Northamptonshire that are steeped in history. It’s no surprise, really, bearing in mind that the old Roman road of Watling Street (now just called the A5) runs up through the county and out the other side. Many of these towns still hold regular farmers’ markets, offering fresh local produce on a weekly basis.

But if you’re currently commuting across London and are wondering if you’re just swapping one commute for another… think again. Not all commutes are equal! Whether you’ve lived in a town or city for most of your life, or already reside in a rural idyll, you’ll still appreciate the outdoor pursuits that Northamptonshire has to offer. From the obvious horse riding, shooting and fishing activities, to canal boats and canoes on waterways, it’s there for you to enjoy. From rambling across muddy fields, to playing village cricket, the county can provide you with wonderful ways to pass the time.
