‘I’m seeing chains of up to nine’: the hellish reality of buying a home in Britain

And James Greenwood, of Stacks Property Search, had a recent case where the bottom link of a chain of four properties started to crumble in the final run-up to the exchange date due to the seller reneging on their offer to include carpets and curtains in the sale price.

“It quickly turned into a loss of goodwill and deal breaker as neither party was prepared to compromise,” Greenwood says. “The buyer at the top of the chain quickly jumped in to save the entire thing breaking down by putting up £5,000 – and giving the details of a recommended curtain maker – for the buyer at the bottom of the chain to buy new carpets and curtains. Peace was restored, and the transactions all went ahead.”
