For many people living in London or other large cities, the idea of moving to South Devon begins as a quiet daydream. Perhaps it starts with a holiday by the coast, a walk across the moors, or simply the feeling that life could be lived at a slightly gentler pace.

But what is it actually like to live here full time?

Having helped many clients relocate to this part of the world, I’ve seen first-hand why people fall in love with this corner of the country.

The Landscape is Extraordinary

One of the first things people notice about South Devon is just how beautiful it is.

Within a relatively small area you have rolling farmland, wooded river valleys, dramatic coastline and the wild open landscape of Dartmoor.

It means your weekends can look very different depending on your mood. One day might be spent walking across the moor, the next paddleboarding along an estuary or swimming off one of the many beautiful beaches.

For people moving from cities, that access to nature often becomes one of the biggest lifestyle changes.

A Strong Sense of Community

The area is also known for its strong and welcoming communities.

The towns and villages across the South Hams have a real sense of local life that many people feel has disappeared from larger urban areas. Local pubs, markets, sailing clubs, sports teams and community events all play a role in bringing people together.

For families in particular, this sense of community can make South Devon a wonderful place to raise children.

A Thriving and Interesting Mix of People

Another aspect that often surprises newcomers is how diverse the community can be.

Over the past decade many people have relocated from London, Bristol and further afield in search of a different lifestyle. As a result, there is a fascinating mix of long-standing local families, creatives, entrepreneurs and professionals who are able to work remotely.

This combination gives many towns in the area a quietly cosmopolitan feel, with interesting independent businesses, excellent food, and a surprising number of creative ventures.

Access to the Water

One of the defining features of life here is proximity to the sea.

Whether it’s sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking or simply walking along the coast, the water plays a big role in everyday life for many residents. The estuaries and harbours dotted along the coast make it one of the best places in the country for boating.

For those who love the outdoors, this is a major draw.

A Different Pace of Life

Perhaps the biggest adjustment for newcomers is the pace.

Life here tends to move a little more slowly. People often walk more, spend more time outside and place a higher value on community and lifestyle than convenience.

For many people, that shift is exactly what they were looking for.

Finding the Right Property

While South Devon is a wonderful place to live, the property market can be surprisingly complex.

The most desirable houses — particularly those with views, land or privacy — often sell quietly before ever reaching the open market. Understanding the nuances between villages, valleys and coastal pockets can also make a significant difference to long-term enjoyment of a property.

Helping buyers navigate those subtleties is a big part of what I do.

If you are considering a move to South Devon and would like guidance on finding the right property or understanding the different areas, I am always happy to have an informal conversation.
