There’s something quietly magical about this part of the world — South Devon and Dartmoor. And if you’re thinking about where to spend your retirement years, I really do think this region deserves your attention.
Now, I’ll admit I’m slightly biased — I live and work here, and help people move to the area — but there’s a reason so many people come down for a weekend and then start wondering… “Could we actually live here?”So here are a few reasons why I think retiring to South Devon and Dartmoor is a genuinely brilliant idea:
1. It’s just beautiful — but in a very liveable way
We’re not short of rolling hills, stunning estuaries, dramatic tors or hidden coves. But what makes this area really special is that you don’t have to do much to enjoy it. A simple walk down to the quay, a coffee with a view, or a short drive up onto the moor — and it’s right there.
2. The pace of life suits where you’re at
If you’re winding down from a career or making space for a new chapter, the rhythm of life here fits. It’s not sleepy, just gentler. People have time for a chat. Villages still have their pubs. Local shops remember your name. You don’t feel rushed — and that’s a gift.
3. There’s a proper community here
This bit often surprises people. Yes, it’s rural, and yes, there are quiet corners — but it’s not isolated. Whether it’s a village hall book club, sailing on the Dart, helping with a local conservation group, or just getting to know your neighbours — people get involved. There’s life here, and plenty of it.
4. Access to the essentials (and a bit of luxury too)
Good healthcare, decent roads, lovely farm shops, trains to London — it’s all here. Totnes, Dartmouth, Ashburton, Chagford — they’ve all got that nice mix of useful and enjoyable. You don’t feel cut off, but you do feel like you’ve escaped.
5. There’s space to breathe — and to think
For many, retirement is a moment to re-evaluate. Whether you want to write, walk, paint, garden, or just be somewhere that clears your head — this part of Devon gives you that room. The moor has a stillness to it that’s hard to explain until you’ve felt it.
6. It’s not all retirees (and that’s a good thing)
Yes, plenty of people do retire here — but it’s not a retirement village in disguise. Families, creatives, working-from-homers, returning Devonians — there’s a real mix. And that keeps things interesting. You can find peace without feeling put out to pasture.
If you’re thinking about it — come see it properly
Stay longer than a weekend. Explore the villages inland, not just the big names on the coast. And if you want an honest chat about what’s realistically available — I’d be glad to help.I see a lot of people make the move down here — and for many of them, it’s the best decision they ever made.
