There’s more to the west country than nostalgia

BEER, DEVON
OK, so there’s paddle-boarding off the coast but otherwise this port, with just over 1,300 residents, is supertraditional. There’s a shingle beach, where you can look out at fishing boats winched up as there’s no harbour, plus surrounding caves and chalk cliffs. A simple treat is barbecuing fresh-outof-the-water mackerel on the beach. The town’s facilities are year-round and there are popular local schools, while a few people commute to nearby Lyme Regis, where property is pricier. A home in Beer costs an average of £215,000, according to Zoopla. “God forbid Beer ever becomes fashionable; most of us Devonians think it is nearly perfect the way it is,” says Gideon Sumption of buying agency Stacks Property Search.
TINTAGEL, CORNWALL
If it’s romance you’re after, head to this north Cornwall port. It has everything: the history of King Arthur’s Castle, waterfalls at St Nectan and a coastline scrambling down cliff paths. “It’s better value than further west, the inland countryside is unspoilt and very lovely, and it’s more popular as people are priced out of Padstow and Polzeath,” says Clare Coode of Stacks Property Search. The average property price here is just under £276,000 compared with Padstow’s £502,000. “The lack of modern facilities in Tintagel is essentially a selling point,” she adds. “Buyers fall in love with the wildness, the history, and the town’s spirituality.” The main downside? It gets very crowded in the summer.
