FAMILY HOME IN CORNWALL?
“The thing about Cornwall is that it carries a big emotional charge and is much more varied than people realise,” says Nicola Oddy, of buying agents Stacks in Cornwall. Windblown clifftops, white sandy beaches, estuaries bobbing with sailing boats, craggy cove – they all set pulses racing.
She used to work in “change management”, which means she organised large-scale recruitment programmes and headhunted. “People were often moving house as part of the deal,” she says. “I used to insist on meeting their wives, children and even dogs, so that I could know if they would go through with the move. It has turned out to be strangely useful.” The family moved to Cornwall from the Home Counties 14 years ago when her children were little, so she knows how difficult it is.
Buying to live in a place is quite different from being on holiday there. “People have to think, how long is the school run, how many miles is it to the hospital, do I need to be in a sailing hotspot and pay that premium or not?”
She often picks people up off the Newquay flight in the morning, whisks them around five or six houses, then puts them back on the evening flight to London. Her big spenders come with £1.5?million to £3?million for a holiday home, but she also loves working with buyers at the other end of the market with £250,000 to £350,000 to spend. “It is impossible for people to keep taking time off to look themselves these days.” That is where she steps in.
