“The legacy of the pandemic was to shine a spotlight on the beauty of the British countryside and remind us of the enduring allure of the country house,” says James Greenwood, managing director of Stacks Property Search. Price is paramount, however: average country house values are 6.5% down on their peak in the second quarter of 2022 but still 11.8% higher than in the first quarter of 2020, according to Knight Frank. Where houses struggle to sell, it’s usually because the price has been too ambitious.
