I gave up a London shoebox for a two-bed flat in Manchester

West Northamptonshire, a predominantly agricultural area which includes the county town of Northampton, as well as Daventry, Brackley and Towcester, is also emerging as a top magnet for southerners. Some of them come here after looking in the Cotswolds and finding they’re priced out, says Rachel Johnston, of Stacks Property Search.

“It has good schools and the same rolling hills as the Cotswolds, but with a quicker commute to London and fewer 4x4s jamming all the roads,” she says.

‘You get a lot more house for your money’

When they were looking to move out of Hammersmith, west London, Jack Millington, 36, and his wife Stephanie, 33, initially focused on the Cotswolds, but struggled to find family homes for less than £1m.

After a year or so, they switched their search to Northamptonshire, and Johnston found them a house in a village outside Towcester. The couple, who have a four-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son, moved in a month ago.
