With a population of around 76,000 Shrewsbury is the county town. A medieval market town with over 660 listed buildings.  Noted for significant historical events: Site of the Battle of Shrewsbury (1403), where Henry IV defeated rebels led by Henry “Hotspur” Percy, together with the birthplace of Charles Darwin (1809).

Key attractions in the town include: Shrewsbury Castle & Regimental Museum, Shrewsbury Abbey (founded in 1083), The Quarry Park (home to the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show) and a number of timber-framed buildings (e.g. Bear Steps, Drapers’ Hall).

The restaurant scene in Shrewsbury is buzzing and there are some fabulous independent boutique shops.

Located in the Ironbridge Gorge, shaped by the River Severn, Ironbridge is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Home to the Iron Bridge (1779), the world’s first cast-iron bridge.  It is part of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

Telford was officially designated a “New Town” in 1968 to accommodate population growth and industrial expansion and named after Thomas Telford, the civil engineer.  Today, Telford is a major technology and business hub, home to industries like automation, manufacturing, and digital technology.

Known for Ludlow Castle, built in the 11th century to control the Welsh border.  It served as the seat of the Council of Wales and the Marches from the 15th to 17th centuries.  In addition, it played a role in the Wars of the Roses.  Today, it is famed for its well-preserved medieval and Tudor architecture.

Other significant towns in the county include, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Wem, Ellesmere, Newport, Whitchurch, Wem, Market Drayton, Bishops Castle, Clun and Montgomery.

The largest town in North Herefordshire, a market town, founded around Leominster Priory (established in 1123).  Known for its wool and textile industry in the medieval period.
