Communication for Shropshire, North Herefordshire and the Marches
There are 19 railway stations in Shropshire offering an excellent service north – south on the Welsh Marches line from Newport to Shrewsbury. Connections run regularly from Shrewsbury to the major hubs of Crewe, Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham. There is a direct service from Shrewsbury to Birmingham connecting on to London Euston. It is also possible to travel to London via Crewe.
There are 3 steam railways in Shropshire.
- Severn Valley Railway, Bridgnorth to Kidderminster (via Bewdley). This is one of the most famous heritage railways in the UK
- Telford Steam Railway, Horsehay, Telford – includes themed events
- Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (Just outside Shropshire), Welshpool, near the Shropshire border – charming narrow-gauge railway.
The major trunk roads in Shropshire and the Marches are primarily the A5 (London to Holyhead) and the A49 which runs through the Marches region, with both roads intersecting in Shrewsbury; the A5 also connects to the M54 motorway near Telford, the only motorway in Shropshire.
The closest airports are Liverpool and Birmingham, and Bristol may suit those in the south of the area. Manchester Airport is relatively accessible depending on location within Shropshire.
