East Devon is one of the West Country’s best kept secrets. The border with West Dorset runs from Lyme Regis to Crewkerne and across the Blackdown Hills to Tiverton and down to Exeter and the popular Exe Estuary. Stunning landscapes, the Jurassic Coast, coastal and market towns offer a fantastic quality of life, in a convenient location.
The Blackdown Hills AONB and the East Devon AONB contain hidden valleys, pretty villages, rivers and views. They are the ideal place to find a tranquil farmhouse or cottage with a few acres to enjoy, yet close to everything when you need it.
Axminster, Colyton and Honiton are traditional market towns, offering supermarkets, doctors, dentists and vets, if you live rurally in the surrounding area. Seaton has a long beach which is never that busy even in the height of Summer.
Sea swimming, fossil hunting, boating and beach walks are found at Lyme, Axmouth, Seaton Hole, Beer and Branscombe. River Cottage HQ is based nearby at Trinity Hill and there are plenty of excellent pubs and eateries.
Further West to Ottery St Mary, and The Pig Hotel at Gittisham, on the coastline Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Topsham and Lympstone all desirable and affordable locations for families with school age children or empty nesters wanting to be near the sea. The famous Darts Farm Shop is a hugely popular destination in this part of the world.
Regional city Exeter within easy reach of everywhere in East Devon and great for restaurants, theatres and larger department stores. Many opt to leave the car at home and travel in and out on the train which is often easier than having to park in town.
Colyton Grammar is one of the highest performing state schools in the country. There are many other good local state schools and private schools are in Exeter or Blundells at Tiverton.
Buying in East Devon can get you more for your money than the more popular locations closeby, you don’t have to put up with tourist traffic in high season, yet the South Hams is only an hour away and North Cornwall is 1 hour 45 mins if you are going that way.
