About North Dorset

North Dorset is an area of rolling countryside split by chalk downs which in turn are breached by the valley of the meandering River Stour. The northerly section of the chalk downs was originally part of the royal hunting reserve of Cranborne Chase, which is still a sparsely populated agricultural area with many copses of mixed deciduous woodland. Shaftesbury to the north, with its famous Gold Hill (of Hovis advert fame) is a hilltop town with a magnificent southerly vista south to Hambledon Hill and the Georgian town of Blandford Forum.

Schools in North Dorset

If you’re looking for a property in North Dorset and you have children, you may be interested in finding out more about the schools. Like elsewhere in Dorset, one is never far from great schools such as Bryanston and nearby Milton Abbey. Southwest of Shaftesbury, the honey stone town of Sherborne offers both a renowned Boys and a famous Girls school, a Prep school and well regarded State School.

More About the Towns in North Dorset

A stunning little town, which would not look out of place in the Cotswolds, Sherborne also boasts two Castles and an Abbey as well as the bustling Cheap Street, well endowed with independent quality shops.

To the south and east of Sherborne is vale country; the heavy clay soils producing rich grass in the summer months, perfect for dairy farming. Thomas Hardy’s ‘vale of the little dairies’ is little changed, offering a patchwork of thickly hedged fields, oak trees and numerous farm houses in a bucolic scene of old England.
