Devon and Cornwall

The west of Dorset, nearly all of which is a governmentally designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has long been overlooked by those travelling down the A303 to the holiday hotspots of Devon and Cornwall, but to those in ‘the know’ (and lovers of Thomas Hardy!) it has always been highly priced for its rolling countryside and its UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic coastline.

Added to this are a sprinkling of beautiful country market towns, set within the rich landscape, such as Bridport, known for rope and net making but now at ease with its arty charm and antiques market, and Beaminster, nestled below rolling hills, both full of independent local shops and hustle and bustle.

Nearer the coast West Bay offers a protected harbour and old-fashioned seaside with views over Lyme Bay to Lyme Regis, once a famous retreat for the rich and famous and important medieval port with its famous Cobb Harbour, beach huts and promenade.

To the east the pebbly Cesil Beach extends 16 miles down to Portland Bill, that great lump of limestone which half of central London is built from! All great places to while away a summer’s day with an ice cream cornet!

The Beautiful Countryside Areas in West Dorset

Betwixt and between these small towns, in the majestic green pastureland which covers this part of Dorset one finds the windswept foreshore, the beautiful Bride Valley, with little villages of stone houses sheltered from the South Westerlies, the small patchwork fields of the Marshwood Vale with panoramic views towards the sea. Further to the east chalky downland, dotted with sheep fall into hidden populated valleys with tributaries such as the Cerne and the Piddle, and their associated settlements (Cerne Abbas with its mythical Giant and the Piddle villages of Piddletrenthide and Piddlehinton, following the Piddle Valley south towards Dorchester) empty into the River Frome, making its way to Poole harbour via watercress beds and an abundance of flora, fauna and human history.

Dorchester

Just a few miles from Maiden Castle, the largest Iron Age hill fort in the UK sits Dorchester, Dorset’s county town, providing useful services, museums, supermarkets and library coupled with an air of shabby chic, especially when compared to its newest neighbour, the King Charles inspired, Poundbury. Built in an organic manner, with strong classical architectural influences this ever-popular town combines the best of traditional vernacular with modern convenience and a lively atmosphere.
