About South and East Dorset

If you’re looking for a classic UK seaside town then South and East Dorset are the perfect location for you.

Weymouth, Portland Harbour, Ringstead, Lulworth and Poole Harbour

Due south of Dorchester lies the faded Georgian seaside town of Weymouth which is currently undergoing major investment and revival. Its classic old quay is now home to great fish restaurants and the town remains lively throughout the year. Further south is Portland Harbour, home to the National Sailing Academy and leading along the coast to the east are the lovely beaches at Ringstead, Lulworth (think Durdle Door, Man O War Cove and Lulworth Cove) and a little inland Tyneham, famously requisitioned in WW2, never to be returned to the villagers. Further east Corfe Castle, sitting on a hill, with views down to Poole Harbour acts as the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck, surrounded on three sides by the sea and a long-established holiday haven!

Studland, Sandbanks and Wimbourne

From the unspoilt sand beaches of Studland, the chain link ferry takes one across the mouth of Poole Harbour, with its numerous boats of all shapes and sizes darting between the islands, to the Sandbanks peninsular, one of the most expensive places on earth to own a home! Old town Poole retains its charm with the Old Quay and Customs House. Home to Sunseeker luxury motorboats its still a working quay as well as a tourist hotspot, but the outskirts of the town have begun to sprawl along with its popularity. To the north sits the Minster town of Wimborne, which provides a good mix between town and country with its pretty square.

Christchurch

To the east of Poole, lies Christchurch, which is almost as watery as Venice with the confluence of the rivers Stour and Avon at the north end of the harbour and the Mude joining in further East. The main attraction though is the harbour with more than 650 beach huts, sandy beaches and tidal creeks, which make it a delight for children of all ages. There are fewer grand waterside properties than in Poole, but plenty with views of the harbour, as well as a reasonable supply of less grand ones close to the beach.

Bournemouth

Further east again is Bournemouth. Bournemouth is hip with lots going on, many wealthy people, not much crime with shops, clubs, pubs and restaurants in easy reach. Unlike a lot of seaside towns it is flat! The University, and many foreign students taking language courses have radically changed what was once regarded as a prime retirement spot, leading to a good mix or all age groups and things to do.

Most properties in Bournemouth are flats. That’s not to say there aren’t any houses, there are lots of every shape and size. The thing is that Bournemouth’s apartments are great. Many have sea views. Some practically have a foot in the sea, others are a little further back, but still with uninterrupted views from Old Harry to the Needles. Further inland there are many with quiet gardens. There are big and small blocks, built in every decade from the 1920’s to the 2010s.

In the early part of the 20th Century, a promenade was built and gradually extended to cover the 7 miles from Canford Cliffs to Southbourne. This protects the sandstone cliffs from the erosion that was constant in the 19thCentury, so that the buildings stay at the top of the cliffs, but removes the natural supply of sand. The council therefore replace the sand at the Western end regularly, so that everyone can delight in this wonderful beach.

There are few parts of Bournemouth more than a mile from the sea, so it’s easy to walk down to and along the beach, via one of the many access paths.
